My Nan

This is a picture of my Nan.  She was born on this day, 6th December 1892 in Grafton, New South Wales. Edie, as she was known to her family, is pictured here with my aunt & uncle.  The year was 1917 and my Grandpa Ted was away fighting in France & Belgium.  I love this photo for so many reasons.  I love how my auntie looks so happy & carefree.  I love her oversized bow atop her head.  I love how cute and chubby my uncle is.  I love how flash my Nan looks with her hair swept up & jewellery on.  But being her youngest grandchild by far, this photo also makes me cry because I never got to meet my Grandpa who fought in WW1; I only ever knew my aunt and uncle as 'old' people who had grandchildren older than me;  my Nan died when I was 11 so feel as if I never really got to know her.  This photo makes me want to ask her so many questions - How did you manage 2 small children whilst Grandpa was away at war?  How did you cope with not knowing if he was safe so far away?  Where is all that lovely jewellery now?

Happy Birthday, Nan.  You're not forgotten.
