Saturday's Dog - Christmas Puppies
Whenever I see puppies advertised as a Christmas present in pet stores (actually any animal) I have a bit of a cringe moment. I wonder how many of these animals will be an impromptu purchase? Does the person receiving the animal actually want an animal to start off with? And more importantly, are they responsible enough to take-on the care of an animal ... no matter whether it's a puppy, budgie or sea monkey! You see, cute animals at Christmas, particularly puppies and kittens, grow up to be gallumphing dogs & scratchy cats by about Easter. Just ask any animal refuge group about their dumpage rates around Easter time, when people have had enough of the pet & want to go on holidays, but don't want to pay for boarding. They're huge! Hopefully these cute little puppies have some forever homes.

Love this post. I am a huge advocate of buying animals from shelters as opposed to pet stores, and certainly never as gifts.
ReplyDeleteI have four rescued (and very spoilt) guinea pigs myself - all adopted from a local shelter that I've been involved with for about 5 years. Usually when we go on holidays to visit the parents they come with us, but this year I'm splurging on boarding for them (and me). It's lovely to know they'll be well cared for, and that I don't have the stress of travelling with anxious pets. :)
I hope they do find happy responsible people who will look after them. I do love the photo. Mimi xx
ReplyDeleteGood post. My aunt received two puppies from her daughter while she was visiting from London. As soon as she left, my aunt found she couldn't look after them. So I took them from her, sold one and kept the other. He is a handful and there have been times when I've come close to selling him. But now I'm too attached :) He and his brother were purchased at a pet shop. I wonder if some of these pet stores actually buy from those horrible puppy farms? You never know do you. Something should be done about that if you ask me. It's a money making machine at the expense of these innocent little creatures.

ReplyDeleteI think the idea of puppies and kittens seems wonderful and amazing, but reality kicks in approximately 24 hours later. It's such a shame that people don't think before they buy someone a pet as a gift.
