So the pressure is on. Not from us at home. It's rather a "reflective pressure" from school. You see, school does a lot to try and minimise any apprehension about Naplan by providing the kids with justifications as to why they're learning particular content (persuasive texts this year) and is giving them lots of opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge through group tasks, individual assignments and of course, homework; holiday homework! But by providing all of these chances for the kids to practise what they've learnt, especially in a mock Naplan test way, the idea of making such test "anxiety free" for kids is actually working in reverse. It's stressing them out!

Homework has contained multi-choice tasks each week, information regarding the administering of the tests is in the school newsletter and if you even think of wanting to apply for a place at a private school, then you'd want to have your Naplan Test result ducks in a row because they're going to be one of the first documents you're going to have to trot out to get your child into a flashy-pants school. Sad really. Let's just hope that things such as generosity, empathy, motivation, perseverance, kindness, etc shines through after our kids have been <strike>Napalmed</strike>, I mean Naplan-ed, in May!

I wish I could enlarge it further but it was a screen shot I took of a sidebar pop-up ad from the ninemsn website. So many questions are swimming around my mind:

Why the socks and slides?

Do the slides belong to the man in the ad? If so, then why a size too big?

Has this man ever been to the beach before? A man who's been to the beach would know how inappropriate such footwear attire would be.

More to the point though, who would find a man, that wears socks and slides (and to the beach for that matter) attractive enough to want to procreate with him in the first place to require a family car?

And finally, is Volkswagen tightening their advertising spend because clearly from this advert, they've been outsourcing their advertising campaigns to Odesk!

This ad stinks!

When I first saw an email for "An Officer & a Gentleman - The Musical" in my inbox, I deleted it without opening thinking the email was junk. Now that I've received another one I've taken the time to open it and cannot believe that this is for real ... the movie, An Officer & a Gentleman as a musical. Seriously?
Maybe people had the same reaction to hearing Victor Hugo's Les Miserables and T S Eliot's Old Possums Book of Practical Cats were now going to be rocking the West End as musicals? I'm not sure. I just want to laugh to think this movie will be played out live on stage. Probably because I can't stand the movie in the first place; over-hyped schmalzy 80's love story with a huge power ballad starring Richard Gere, who I still can't see what all the fuss is about with him.

What about you? Do you love a musical? Or are you the kind of person who grabs the remote and fast forwards through "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"?
Who am I kidding ... everyday! I love looking at interiors and landscaping, particularly on properties I will never in a lifetime be able to afford. One such "out of my reach" property caught my eye yesterday. It's at New Farm. Beautiful old house with most traditional features intact on a generous block. Feast your eyes on the photos from the listing, paying attention to the decorating, rather than the bones of the house. Those with crap eyesight, like me, may need to enlarge the photos.
How on earth did we get to the month of March? I had planned on getting back into blogging in the New Year. Even had a funny graphic all picked out (see below) but for some reason, I feel like I'm only just coming up for air now ... and it's MARCH!

A lot has happened though since I last blogged:

Hubby has started working for himself which has been adjustment for both of us.

All three children are now at school. Miss Flea started Prep and Big Girl moved to an all girls school for Yr 5.

We had the most fabulous holiday in Fiji, which was on my wish list at the end of 2010.

The above holiday was greatly needed after I completed a 3 day a week teaching contract for term 4 of 2011. Hats off to those mums who can successfully combine work and family life. I'm crap at it.

Progress has also been made on the Promised Dog.

Plus there's been milestone anniversaries, sport and more sport, landscaping around the house and the ballet concert from hell - 1680 beads and sequins had to be sewn in 3 days!

This kind of thing gives me the creeps ... if only I could have zoomed in closer but there were people around. It's a photo of a work colleague's car. I'm not exactly sure who the car belongs to but I'm quite certain if I were ever to meet them and they invited me around to their house, I'd have to decline. If this is what their car looks like, imagine what I'd be greeted with in the living room? I wouldn't be able to find a place to sit as I'd have to remove Tommy Tiger, Suzie Sheep and Boo Boo the Bear from the lounge chair.
As we were early, we sat in the car & to pass the time I caught up on some emails via the iPhone. My girlfriend, from the previous post, had shared some photos she had taken at her nephew's farewell. They were so beautiful & happy. A real celebration of life. As I walked Miss Flea into Kindy I pushed back the tears because I didn't want anyone to think that something was wrong. When we got inside, Miss Flea was ever so excited to find something special in her locker.
I kissed Miss Flea good-bye as she happily sat down to play a board game with her friends & hot footed it back to the car where I immediately burst into tears. I think I had a cry for a few reasons; my friend & her family who are going through so much heart-ache, her nephew, the innocence of childhood & how my Miss Flea is coming towards the end of her early childhood education (unfortunately) & will soon be faced with the demands of the National Curriculum (don't get me started).
I think Melissa Manchester had it wrong when she says "Don't cry out loud, just keep it inside, learn how to hide your feelings." Sometimes you just need a good cry. I know I certainly felt better for it.
Sometimes Neither.I've been doing a lot of thinking this past week how life can change so dramatically in a flash and whether there is such thing as good fortune, fate or just plain luck. Why do things turn out ok in the end ... for some.

Do you believe in any superstitions? If I have to walk under a ladder I will. If the best house in the street was number 13, I'd be ok with that and if I were to break a mirror I'd be more annoyed I'd have to sweep up the glass rather than worried that I was in for 7 years bad luck, but I do get a little anxious when I can see a numerical trend forming. I can sometimes be one who leans towards believing things come in 3's. One case in point, which I've been doing a lot of thinking about this week, are my nephews. I've had 3 nephews hit by cars and all have miraculously survived.

Nephew number one was out celebrating a footy victory and decided to take a short-cut home ... via a busy off ramp! As fate had it (is this what it was ... fate?) an off duty nurse was first on the scene of the accident and was able to assist him. The policeman first on the scene thought he was done for. Visiting him in ICU, I thought the same but he survived and is fighting fit, albeit some scars.

Nephew number two was in a celebratory mood and somehow ended up falling asleep (passing out perhaps) ... behind a car in his driveway. A friend of his decided to go looking for him, in the car, and ended up reversing over him! He was about to be discharged from hospital after an overnight stay when he passed out. Thankfully for him (is it thanks?) the new doctor on duty picked up some major oversights the previous doctor had made. Nephew number two is now back at work & sporting some decent scars.

Nephew number three was out with friends at the local & decided to walk home ... on the shoulder of a major road! Can you see a trend forming here folks? Yes, he was hit by a car, from behind by a 4WD. Luckily for him (was it luck? it certainly wasn't luck for the driver), he was with a group of mates who called for help and the driver stopped. Nine months down the track, with multiple operations & hospitalisations, nephew number three can walk unassisted. His ankle is pretty much shot. I doubt he will ever trek Kokoda, or even jog down the beach, but he can walk.

For a friend of mine though, her little nephew was not so lucky. He was one of the children who has tragically been killed by a family car over the past few weeks and I have not stopped thinking about it. The child. The parents. My friend. The pain. The blame. The recounting. The emptiness. The sadness. Why was there no luck, fate or thankfulness here?

It is just so bloody tragic.
I know the Cunningham's kitchen was nothing like this & possibly the kitchen isn't quite of that era, but the lino floors, push button cabinetry & built-in breakfast table brings back memories of kitchens I was familiar with when I was young. Very young, I'd like to point out ;-) A lot were being pulled out to make way for mission brown & orange bench tops. I think I prefer this one.
The saying you've got to be cruel to be kind is probably one of the hardest ones to actually employ on your own children. Whether it be through taking away something special of theirs as a consequence, letting your children make mistakes and hoping that they take some learning from them or giving your kids some honest, but not always pleasant, words about how their behaviour, actions, attitudes or choices have made you and/or others feel, it's never easy. Seeing your children sad is a tough gig, but actually letting them be sad, without trying to smooth things over & fight their battles for them, is even harder.
Well, for me it's thou shalt not covet thy house in thy neighbouring suburb! This is what I've been covetting for the past two weeks.

This is Valhalla and I'm covetting it something bad! I saw Valhalla appear on a real estate alert & recognised it straight away. Back in the late nineties Hubby & I were looking at buying acreage at Pullenvale. The developer had, in his previous development, relocated several historic homes and buildings that were destined for the wrecking ball. He had suggested that if we were interested in relocating an old home then perhaps he might have one. It, of course, was Valhalla. Unfortunately for us, but fortunately for Valhalla, the developer wasn't able to get the house removed so we never proceeded with purchasing the acreage. Now thirteen years on, Valhalla is up for sale, looking so much better than she once did.

I dragged Hubby through an open for inspection of Valhalla hoping that he would see the same potential as I did. Look at all the land I would say. Hubby would say yes, but look at the big block of flats it's next to. Look at the views I said. Look at all of the commuter cars parked in the street said Hubby. Feel those bay breezes I would say. Listen to those six lanes of traffic Hubby responded. Look at all of the original features I pleaded. Yes, but look at how basic the kitchen is & the non-existent laundry he reminded me. Hubby just wasn't showing the same enthusiasm for Valhalla like I was & I was devastated ... but not surprised. Afterall, he hates buying & selling and is practically allergic to stamp duty & agents fees. Hubby is also a very logical & practical person & the fact that our house, although recently renovated, is still needing some finishing touches & isn't ready for sale was a major obstacle he pointed out.

So it looks like I'll have to go back to covetting ... and adding those finishing touches to ours just in case Valhalla doesn't sell straight away. Surely I'm not breaking any commandments by indulging in a little wishing & hoping and a lot of praying?
Now I've done ok with the comments on fave blogs. So-so on discovering new blogs and pretty crap on the blogging front. Politics here I come! We've had pestilence (me sick, hubby sick, me sick again and kids sick), plague (school sores, hives and ear infections) and purgatory (jazz ballet exams, sports carnivals x 2, committee meetings, canteen duty, kindy roster and school excursions) so my commitment to my blogging faith has been neglected.

In exchange for your forgiveness, I promise to blog 2 times a week, <s>say</s> make 5 comments a day on my favourite blogs and seek out 3 new blogs a week to follow.

Amen
He really couldn't make up his mind. But one thing the Little Master was sure about was the fact he was glad one of his really wobbly teeth didn't fall out today because that would mean the Tooth Fairy would also have to visit tonight and he thought that wouldn't be such a good idea. According to the Little Master, the Tooth Fairy might hear a noise made by the Easter Bunny & think it was him still awake & therefore not take his tooth & replace it with a coin. That would be a problem in the land of Tooth Fairies, Easter Bunnies & their like I suppose & an even greater problem when you're 7 like the Little Master is and you're really excited still about Tooth Fairies & Easter Bunnies.
It got me thinking ... I wonder how much longer my children are going to believe in things like the Easter Bunny, Santa, etc? Big Girl, who is 9, is still a huge believer in everything, particularly fairies. I know some people see perpetuating the myth of Santa, etc as lying to children but I love how my children can justify the existence of things such as fairies. Big Girl can find their magic in the simplest things e.g. she found some perfectly intact butterfly wings recently. To her, they'd been used by fairies. Such a beautiful imagination that I don't want to crush, but I suppose there will come a time when all will be revealed ... just not yet please.
Whaaah!!! It doesn't!

This was my favourite cookie jar which I use to keep all the birthday candles, decorations, etc in. Actually, it was my second favourite cookie jar up until the beginning of last year. I had a barrel cookie jar which belonged to my grandmother. It was packed incorrectly in the move (ahem ... hubby) and it ended up smashed and completely irreparable. Anyway, I was rushing about getting dinner ready before I had to go out tonight & I put some matches back into the jar & was a little hasty in putting the lid back on. At the time I was standing on a mini step ladder, as the jar is kept on the high shelf in the pantry. Rather than try and catch the falling lid, for some reason I decided to watch the lid fall, hoping that it was going to land on the large tupperware container below and possibly bounce ... it didn't.

Whilst I can still use the jar, the lid is pretty rusak ... That's Bahasa for broken ... a good word to use around children when you really want to say it's #*#*#*!!! Although the lid doesn't look that bad in the photo, there are a few too many little pieces which have broken off and I'm afraid even my Dad's super aralditing skills may not be able to fix this one. I so loved it :-(
I can't believe I've only managed to squeeze in one blog post & that has been a rather shameful one ... read the Crumbed Son below if you want to feel good about your parenting skills. Anyway, I'm over visiting at the Pink Fibro & rewinding a post from November 2010.
I should also tell you that I was in the middle of crumbing chicken for dinner when the below mentioned took place.
The Little Master aka The Congenial Child, is usually really easy to get along with & happy to oblige you with most things you ask, but from time to time, he can turn into a real "bull calf". The bull calf will dig his heals in, and no matter how hard you pull that rope you've tied around his neck (metaphorically speaking), he will remain just as obstinate. That's what happened last night when I asked The Little Master to go and have a shower. Rather than amicably oblige, The Little Master decided to have a hissy fit about some teeny tiny paper cut on his finger that would stiiinnnngggg if he so much as got a droplet of water on it.
The to-ing and thro-ing of me going "Get in the shower" and him going " No Mum!" was broken when a "Suck it up, princess!" was shouted by Big Girl from the playroom. Now that's what I'd been thinking in my head, but I knew if I'd said it, The Little Master would go right off ... and explode he did. He charged into the playroom & slapped Big Girl so hard on the arm, I'm surprised he didn't leave finger marks. Any sensible parenting I'd been doing up until that moment was now thrown completely out the window as I frog-marched The Little Master down to the bathroom, turned on the cold water tap & stuck his paper cut finger under the running water. Sticky crumbing hands and all, I somehow managed to strip his clothes off but The Little Master was still protesting about getting in the shower ... you'd think he'd have given up by now, but no. So what to do with those sticky hands of mine? When I was presented with a protesting, bare little body, that was going to get into the shower anyway, I thought why not clean them off there ... on him. One crumbed son. Would Super Nanny approve? Probably not. Did it now give The Little Master a need to get into the shower? Yes. Will he ever carry on again like that about getting into the shower? I doubt it.
The pictures in the catalogue made me wonder whether the ladies from Fun and VJs or Make Mine Mid-Century had been moonlighting as stylists? I'll let you be the judge.
